Austin Bold FC’s sellout inaugural home match is set to be significant in three ways. While obviously being a USL Championship regular season match, the contest will also be the first Central Texas Derby with nearest rivals San Antonio FC, as well as counting towards the new Copa Tejas.
Copa Tejas is an unofficial cup between the four USL Championship teams located in Texas, Austin Bold FC, El Paso Locomotive FC, RGV Toros FC, and San Antonio FC. There are twelve 2019 Copa Tejas matches in total, with each team playing the others at home and away in the USL Championship regular season.
Current standings as of March 29:
Both Bold (0-1-1) and SAFC (0-2-1) are on the hunt for their first win of the USL Championship season. The two teams are located roughly an hour apart, making the Austin trip San Antonio’s closest official away match in club history. The short distance should enable SAFC to see the most traveling support it has ever had, in a time where it is needed most.
Former SAFC players Kris Tyrpak, Diego Restrepo, and Sonny Guadarrama could see action against their former club for the first time since departing, marking a bittersweet reunion for some SAFC fans.
